The markup-margin confusion costs real money in one direction only. A contractor who wants a 30 percent margin and applies a 30 percent markup gets a 23 percent margin instead, seven points short on every job, forever. The two percentages describe the same profit dollars against different bases: markup against cost, margin against price.
